Bumbogo is a washing station located in the Gakenke district, an area known for high-quality coffee production in Rwanda.
The station has more than doubled their production since 2018, working alongside the community in ways other than just the purchase and processing of its coffee. This value added by this project has massively improved not only the quality but the yields of the producers’ land.
All the coffee cherries are hand-sorted, pulped and fermented in dedicated tanks for an average of 12 hours. During which the coffee is agitated regularly by ceremonial foot-stomping.
During the washing process, the coffee is continuously agitated to sort different densities and to clean off residual mucilage. Once separated into grades, it is given a final rinse. At this point, coffee is taken to a pre-drying area where it is hand-sorted again, removing any insect-damaged, discoloured or chipped coffee.
The parchment is laid out to dry and turned on a regular basis for 30 days. This thorough process has resulted in a super clean and vibrant cup!
The carbon footprint from this coffee's journey has been offset twice.
